SUMMARY:Paintings by Wendi Hulslander on Display Now Through April
DESCRIPTION:Familiar Keene landmarks highlight the exhibit of acrylic paintings by local artist Wendi Hulslander\, on display in the East Room Gallery\, United Church of Christ in Keene\, 23 Central Square\, from now through the end of April. \nThe artist writes\, “My earlier art is close to photo realism\, consisting of historical scenes from my hometown of Keene NH — such as the Ye Goodie Shoppe\, Timoleon’s city block\, the Wyman Tavern\, and Ashuelot River park. I also paint when I am away in the tropics\, and have many tropical island scenes.” \nMs. Hulslander is a member of the Monadnock Area Art Association and has won multiple awards at the annual Art in the Park in Keene. She says\, “Once you realize you can paint\, nothing is the same. You walk in a vivid world of opportunity. Every flower garden that grows\, each twinkle of ocean water\, a city scene in front of you\, a homeless person on the street or dogs in a golf cart… they are all potential paintings.” \nThe exhibit is open from 11 am to noon every Sunday\, and by appointment during the week by calling the church office\, 603-352-4136. It is closed Saturdays. There is an accessible entrance at the rear of the Church\, off Vernon Street. Exhibit is on the first floor. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Rev. Cindy Bagley Co-Leads Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Reverend Cynthia Bagley\, senior pastor of the United Church of Christ in Keene\, will be one of the leaders of a book discussion at Covenant Living of Keene\, 95 Wyman Road\, from 10:30 to noon\, Monday\, March 18. She and Covenant Living Chaplain Becky Poor will discuss\, “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers\,” by Loung Ung. \nLoung Ung is a childhood survivor of the Cambodian genocide under the regime of Pol Pot. You’re invited to read this book and/or watch this film\, then join others for the discussion with Chaplain Becky Poor and Rev. Cindy Bagley at 10:30 to noon on Monday\, March 18\, at Covenant Living of Keene. \nAll are welcome to attend these events.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday\, Special Lenten Sermon Series
DESCRIPTION:The Gift of Failure \n36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane\, and he said to them\, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him\, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them\, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”39 Going a little farther\, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed\, “My Father\, if it is possible\, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will\, but as you will.”40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing\, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:36-40 \nFrom parade to passion\, Palm Sunday culminates in what appears to be one huge disaster for Jesus and his followers. Have you experienced failure? Has it ever led you to something new or unexpected? What might you accomplish if you weren’t afraid of failure? As we enter this holiest of week in the Christian calendar\, let’s embrace what failure feels like\, and the hidden graces within these hard times. \n  \n\n  \nSpecial Lenten Sermon Series\nHave you failed recently? Do you feel lost\, or like the road ahead is unclear? Are you ever tempted? Do you find any part of your life exhausting? Do you feel out of place among your peers\, or society at large? Based on themes explored in Eric Elne’s book\, Gifts of the Dark Wood\, our Lenten sermon series this year explores the proposition that our best help on life’s journey often comes from the most unlikely and misunderstood of places: a place known famously\, or infamously\, as the Dark Wood. \nJoin us for Sunday worship at 10:00 am!\nLive stream at ucckeene.org/worship-care/live/.

SUMMARY:Tenebrae Service at UCC-Keene
DESCRIPTION:Maundy Thursday is March 28 this year and is highlighted at United Church of Christ in Keene with the Tenebrae service. The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of Holy Week \,from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus’ burial. The story is told through readings and music. Attendees will leave in silence and near darkness. \nThe United Church of Christ in Keene is located at 23 Central Square. There is an accessible entrance at the rear\, from Vernon Street or the Bank of America parking lot. Once inside\, there is an elevator to the Sanctuary. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Easter Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Where Do We Go from Here? \nTraditional Worship with Choir and Handbells \nWhen the sabbath was over\, Mary Magdalene\, Mary the mother of James\, and Salome bought spices\, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week\, when the sun had risen\, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another\, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up\, they saw that the stone\, which was very large\, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb\, they saw a young man\, dressed in a white robe\, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them\, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth\, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look\, there is the place they laid him. But go\, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him\, just as he told you.” — Mark 16:1-7 \nOn Ash Wednesday\, at the beginning of our trek into the Dark Woods\, we heard of Peter’s sinking failure as a spiritual gift. Even towards the end\, Peter fails to keep his promise to his beloved Jesus\, denying any association with him three times when the going gets rough. But again\, it is this utter failure that will guide and strengthen him for what comes next. Upon this sinking rock\, the church is built and expanded to include others considered “other” or “unworthy.” The story of those who surrounded Jesus parallels our own failures\, fears\, and missteps. Where do we go from here? We journey into our fulness\, continuing to embrace the Gifts of the Dark wood where the Spirit beckons us into new and extraordinary lives. \nJoin us for Sunday worship at 10:00 am!\nLive stream at ucckeene.org/worship-care/live/.

SUMMARY:Interfaith Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:“In virtually every transformative movement in human history\, people of faith have been at the center of the action. Catalysts. Laborers. Visionaries. Now\, as we confront what is arguably the greatest challenge in human history\, God is calling us all to step up once more. To love the world – and put our love into action.” Matthew Myer Boulton \nIn this spirit\, please join us for a time of conversation and learning as we explore how different faith traditions inform one’s understanding of the climate crisis and identify the passions we share.
