Worshipers at the United Church of Christ in Keene are not currently hearing the Church’s magnificent pipe organ because its long-awaited repair has begun. A new computer has arrived, with the intention that it will be wired in and operational by the Easter Service on March 31.
The organ has three manuals and 40 ranks of pipes. It has been struck by lightning many times over the years, with increasing severity. Last year, lightning mitigation equipment was installed on the Church’s roof to protect the entire building. Two additional surge suppression units will now be installed, specifically for the organ.
After the pipe organ was struck by lightning in September 2021, Bill Czelusniak, of Czelusniak Organ Co., and his team spent weeks correcting the damage. It became obvious that the computerized operating system installed in 1995 needed to be replaced. The new 2024 solid-state drive allows the three keyboards and the pedals to communicate with the ranks of pipes, while the blower motor pushes air through the pipes as electro-pneumatic action. The purchase and installation of this computerized operating component is covered by the Church’s insurance.
While the organ is under reconstruction, two additional improvements will be made—replacing the very old Swell Expression motor, and putting into place several pipes which have been stored away for years. Funding for these projects comes from the Organ Development Fund.
Four historical photographs of the organ are on display in the second floor hallway of the Parish House, near the Parlor and Choir Room, showing different configurations of the pipes and organ console, beginning in 1865, then 1903, 1967, and the current design from the 1980s.
